3DX-Ray introduces portable x-ray detection unit for bomb and threat detection

20 June 2007
3DX-Ray has introduced a new version of its lightweight TPXi Portable X-ray unit. The TPXi-675 is lightweight, fast to deploy, and is ideal for imaging the internal contents of suspect packages that have been left in passenger terminals or other high threat risk areas.

As well as offering the highest image quality of any comparable system it also offers the world’s largest detector area – around 4 times the size of A4 (500 x 400mm). This gives it the ability to image most suspect packages in one go without the danger of having to go back to reposition it. It can be used in either landscape or portrait mode (or any angle in-between) and, as the detector is just 5cm thick it can even squeeze behind packages that are left close to a wall.

Once the x-ray source is dropped on one side of the suspect package and the unit’s extra large and ultra-thin detector behind it, the operator retires to a safe distance having spent minimum time “on-target” and the TPXi-675 is controlled - and the images viewed - remotely on a laptop PC with an industrial strength Bluetooth connection.

Amongst its many advantages are that the TPXi-675 produces the “best-in-class images” of any comparable system world-wide. The high quality image and image processing capability also means that more packages than ever can now be safely identified – leading to far fewer false identifications along with the resulting controlled explosions and disruption. Previously, where the operator was unsure the package had to be considered as potential bomb.

The TPXi is light, portable and easy to operate. The detector weighs just 8kg and the x-ray source 6.5kg.
